Cold plunge vs. ice bath

A cold plunge is a short dip in cold water of about 3 to 15 °C, usually in a tub with its own chiller that holds the temperature; an ice bath is the older version, cooled with bagged ice.

Also: cold plunge, ice bath, cold plunge pool, cold water immersion

Cold plunge, ice bath, ice barrel, cold water swim

The terms are often used as if they meant the same thing. An “ice bath” is a tub of cold water, traditionally cooled with bagged ice. “Cold plunge” has caught on for tubs with their own chiller that are always ready. An “ice barrel” is the barrel-shaped version. A cold water swim happens outdoors, in the sea or a lake.

What a cold plunge session looks like

Common practice is 1 to 3 minutes at 3 to 15 °C, seated up to the shoulders. Beginners start warmer and shorter. In the first seconds breathing speeds up (the cold shock response), so get in slowly and breathe out calmly. Afterwards, dry off and warm up with movement or warm clothes.
