What is an infrared sauna? Compact saunas explained simply
Updated
An infrared sauna does not heat the room air like a classic Finnish sauna. Instead it produces infrared radiation that the body absorbs directly, encouraging warmth from the inside out. Portable or mobile infrared saunas – such as Helsi™ One, a compact infrared cabin for one person in a distinctive dome design – bring this principle into your home, even a small flat, with no fixed electrical connection and no complicated installation.
In short
An infrared sauna does not heat the room air but produces infrared radiation that the body absorbs directly; the air temperature is about 45 to 65 °C, below that of a classic sauna (80 to 100 °C). Helsi™ One Sauna Dome is a compact infrared cabin for one person with graphene far-infrared heaters in both domes and the mat, plus 132 LEDs (66 × 630–660 nm, 66 × 810/830/850 nm). Extended it needs 200 × 80 cm; slid together it stands at 100 × 76.5 × 48 cm, like a side table, and it runs on a normal household socket (1,800 W).

How does an infrared sauna work?
Classic saunas heat the surrounding air to 80 to 100 °C, so the body is made to sweat indirectly through the heated air. Infrared saunas work differently: infrared heating elements produce radiation in the near, mid or far infrared range, which penetrates the upper layers of the skin and is converted into heat there.
At around 45 to 65 °C, the air temperature in the cabin stays noticeably lower than in a traditional sauna – you still sweat, often even more intensely, because the body is warmed from the inside.
This direct warming raises the heart rate and widens the blood vessels, similar to moderate physical activity – an effect occasionally described as “passive exercise”. The circulation is stimulated without any active movement being necessary.

A look back: the history of the sauna and infrared technology
Over 2,000 years
Finnish sauna tradition
The sauna itself looks back on over 2,000 years of Finnish tradition and was originally a place for personal hygiene and social gathering.
Mid-20th century
Infrared as a heat source in Japan
Infrared technology as a heat source for saunas was developed in Japan in the middle of the 20th century.
1980s–90s
The wellness market in the US and Europe
In the 1980s and 1990s, infrared technology found its way into the US and, later, the European wellness market.
Today
Portable and dome-shaped models
Portable and dome-shaped models are the latest development of this idea: they make the infrared sauna experience accessible without a fixed cabin, building work or a room of your own.
What is an infrared sauna used for?
Daily relaxation ritual: Many users build the sauna into their day as a fixed appointment for a conscious break.
Recovery after exertion: After training or a demanding day, the warmth is often used as part of a recovery routine.
Preparing for sleep: A session in the early evening is appreciated by many as part of their evening routine before bed.
Stress relief: The calm, warm environment without distractions is often used on purpose to switch off.
Combining with other modalities: Combined with red light therapy – as with Helsi™ One Sauna – two heat and light applications can be joined in a single routine.
How Helsi™ One Sauna Dome works
In Helsi™ One Sauna Dome, graphene far-infrared heaters sit in both domes and in the mat, so the heat comes from above and below, all around you.
You lie on the mat and the two domes close over you. With the rechargeable Bluetooth controller you set the zones separately and choose one of three modes: infrared, red light or both.
With Helsi™ One, your head stays outside the dome. Your body warms up and you sweat intensely without getting a “hot” head, which many people find stressful.
Besides heat, Helsi™ One Sauna Dome has 132 LEDs for full-body red light: 66 red at 630–660 nm and 66 near-infrared at 810, 830 and 850 nm. EMF and ELF values are 0.1 mG.
Side view: upper dome, lower dome and mat are controlled separately. 200 cm extended with the mat.

Space, weight and power
The special thing about Helsi™ One Sauna Dome: you can set it up and take it down within a few minutes. Folded, the compact sauna needs less than 1 m² of space; set up, about 2 m².
Precisely: extended, Helsi™ One Sauna Dome is 183.3 cm long, 200 cm with the mat; the mat measures 200 × 80 × 3 cm. Slid together it stands upright at 100 × 76.5 × 48 cm and fits in a corner like a side table. Rails and rubber wheels make opening and closing easy.
The red light, the infrared mat and all heaters are already built in. The sauna can therefore be heated up within a few minutes and is ready to use shortly afterwards.
The domes weigh 43 kg, the mat 10 kg. You do not need a special power connection: a normal 16 A household socket at 230–240 V is enough. Helsi™ One Sauna Dome draws 1,800 W in total, about 7.5 A.

Safety and what to look out for
Infrared saunas are harmless for most healthy adults, but should be used with attention to your own body. Drinking enough before and after use is important to make up for the fluid you lose.
Start with short sessions and build up slowly until you know how your body responds to the heat.
Pregnant women and people with cardiovascular conditions, or who take medication that affects body temperature regulation, should seek medical advice before use. If you feel unwell during a session, end it immediately.

A classic sauna heats the room air to 80 to 100 °C, whereas an infrared sauna warms the body directly through infrared radiation at much lower air temperatures of 45 to 65 °C. The measured air temperature is of secondary importance here, as the heat comes mainly from the infrared radiation of the heating elements.
Two to four times a week is a common rhythm that many users find pleasant. You can enjoy a session in the morning or in the evening, either to get energised or to unwind after a long day.
Most sessions last between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on your tolerance and how you feel.
Yes. The principle – direct warming through infrared radiation – is the same, whether it is a fixed cabin or a portable model such as Helsi™ One Sauna. Another advantage of Helsi™ One is that your head sits practically outside the sauna. Your body warms up and you sweat intensely without getting a “hot” head, which many people find stressful.
No, portable models such as Helsi™ One Sauna are designed to run on a normal household socket. At 1,800 W in total (about 7.5 A at 230–240 V), the sauna simply plugs into a normal 16 A household socket and is energy efficient.
The special thing about Helsi™ One Sauna is that it can be set up and taken down within a few minutes. Thanks to its innovative design, the compact sauna needs less than 1 m² of space when folded (slid together: 100 × 76.5 × 48 cm). Set up, it needs about 2 m² (extended on its mat: 200 × 80 cm). The red light, the infrared mat and all heaters are already built in, so it can be heated up within a few minutes and is ready to use shortly afterwards.
No. Helsi™ One Sauna Dome is designed for indoor use only. Place it on a flat, dry floor near a socket.
It has 132 LEDs: 66 red at 630–660 nm and 66 near-infrared at 810, 830 and 850 nm. The heat comes from graphene far-infrared heaters in the domes and the mat.
Yes. The controller has three modes: infrared, red light or both, so you can run a red light session without the far-infrared heaters.
